Summer Academies

The University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo has three summer academies for talented young people of different ages. These deal with STEM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and are intended to attract students to explore careers in STEM. The criteria for selecting students are the following:

• General average of 3.50 or more.
• Average in Science and Mathematics courses of 3.50 or more.
• Be a full-time student in public, private or homeschooling school.
• The student must write an essay that explains why he / she wants to participate in the academy.
• Student must be available for personal interview if necessary.

LASED STEM Academy June 11 – June 22 LASED
Aimed at students currently coursing the 7th and 8th grade. In the LASED STEM Academy, students will have fun and learn through workshops and conferences on difference scientific areas such as robotics, geology, ecology, chemistry, fractals, aerospace technology, engineering, astrobiology and astronomy. Students will also go on field trips to places of scientific interest in the island. Registration for 2018 is now closed.

ISMuL Summer STEM Academy June 11 – June 22                    June 18 – June 29 ISMuL
Aimed at students currently coursing the 7th and 8th grade. In the LASED STEM Academy, students will have fun and learn through workshops and conferences on difference scientific areas such as robotics, geology, ecology, chemistry, fractals, aerospace technology, engineering, astrobiology and astronomy. Students will also go on field trips to places of scientific interest in the island. Registration for 2018 is now closed.

CS4Girls Computer Science for Girls June 25 – July 9 ISMuL/RoDeL
For girls 13 through 16 interested in learning about the world of computation. Participants will assist workshops on the different opportunities this field has to offer, and will enjoy to use innovative tools when learning the basic concepts of computer science through activities such as creating a 3D animation and working with educational robotics platforms. Through CS4Girls participants can find out if a future in computing or related careers is for them. Register

Astronomy and Space Science Academy June 25 – June 29 PHL
Aimed at students from 9th through 12ve grade, in this academy students explore space sciences. Participants will receive workshops and conferences about astronomy, solar physics, exoplanets, planetary geology, radio-astronomy and our solar system. Students will also go on a field trip to the Arecibo Observatory.Register
